Winds gusting in excess of 100 mph have downed power lines in northern Nevada, causing power outages for thousands of residents in Reno and wreaking havoc with travel.The California Highway Patrol closed a stretch of westbound of Interstate 80 north of Lake Tahoe on Tuesday morning after wind flipped a truck on its side.
The National Weather Service said winds topped the 125 mph mark at the Mount Rose Ski Resort between Reno and Tahoe.
About 2,500 people were without power in the Reno area.
Sustained winds of 63 mph were recorded at Reno-Tahoe International Airport, where several flights have been canceled or delayed. A gust of 107 mph was recorded just south of town on U.S. Highway 395.
