A magnitude 5.9 quake hit off the northern coast of the Philippines, the U.S. Geological Survey reported on Monday.
The strong quake, initially reported as a magnitude 6.1, struck on Tuesday at 3:58 a.m. (Monday at 1958 GMT). Its epicenter was 26 miles northeast of Laoag, in Luzon, 26.5 miles below the seabed.
A magnitude 5.9 quake is capable of causing considerable damage.
