Atlanta Marks 2-Year Anniversary Of Tornado

Sunday marks the second anniversary of the tornado that hit downtown Atlanta. The 130 mph tornado ripped through the city, leaving a path of destruction on March 14, 2008. The storm blew out windows from dozens of high-rise buildings and tossed trees and cars. One person was killed near downtown.

The twister hit while thousands of basketball fans were watching a Southeast Conference college basketball tournament in the Georgia dome. Thousands more were watching an NBA game in Phillips Arena. Both venues felt the impact of the storm's damaging path.

Atlanta has shown its resilience and strength as downtown businesses including the Westin Peachtree Plaza, the Georgia Dome, the Hilton, Centennial Tower, the Omni Hotel and others have undergone repairs while staying open for business.

The Westin Peachtree Plaza is currently receiving a facelift to repair broken windows and other damage created by the storm. All 6,350 windows in the 73-story hotel are in the midst of being replaced.
