Patrick Swayze still smoking despite cancer?

Actor Patrick Swayze has been unable to give up smoking, despite being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

The Dirty Dancing star was spotted leaving Stanford University Hospital in California, puffing on a cigarette.

The 55-year-old, who looked thinner than in his Hollywood heyday, boarded a private jet to take him home. He has been a heavy smoker for years, once admitting that he got through three packets, or 60 cigarettes, every day.

Dr Kat Arney, of Cancer Research UK, said: "Some believe up to a third of all pancreatic cancer cases are linked to smoking."

It was initially reported that Mr Swayze had been told he had just weeks to live after the shock diagnosis last week.

However his doctor, George Fisher, insisted: "Patrick has a very limited amount of the disease and appears to be responding well to treatment.

"We are optimistic."

His mother, Patsy, has also revealed the pain of watching her son battle with the disease.

She said: "It breaks my heart to know he's suffering, but he bears it.

"He's hanging in there and getting the best treatment he can. He doesn't deserve to get this. He's got such a big heart."

Swayze has promised to carry on acting despite the illness. He was filming the pilot of a new television drama shortly before he was diagnosed.
